Goodbudget gives you envelopes. Mitten fills them for you.
Upload the statement your bank already gives you and Penny files every line into its envelope. Your starting amounts come from what you really spent, and everyone at home signs in as themselves. No typing, no bank login.
Free for 14 days, no card needed.
An example statement, read by Penny for Grace and Daniel. The line COSTCO WHSE #0117 becomes Costco, 142 dollars 68, which Penny suggests moving from Other to Groceries at 90 percent confidence, with a confirm waiting beside it. NETFLIX.COM 866-579 becomes Netflix under Subscriptions, and CHEVRON 0204511 becomes Chevron under Transportation.
Five reasons envelope budgeters pick Mitten over Goodbudget.
Nobody enters expenses by hand.
Upload a PDF or CSV statement and Penny names each line and drops it into an envelope. ‘COSTCO WHSE #0117’ becomes Costco, under Groceries, and she asks about anything she isn't sure of. A month's spending is in its envelopes in minutes.
Goodbudget: You add spending yourself or upload QFX, OFX or CSV files, then assign envelopes to the lines it could not guess. Automatic bank sync comes with Premium.
It works with your bank, wherever you bank.
Goodbudget wants QFX, OFX or CSV files. Mitten also reads the PDF statement most banks send, in any country, with no list of supported banks and no sync to set up.
Goodbudget: Automatic bank sync is for US banks only, on Premium.
Envelopes start from your real months.
The setup reads the months you have uploaded and proposes an amount for each envelope. Choose zero-based, 50/30/20 or your own split, and change your mind later. Each envelope shows what is left, next to the days left in the month.
A debt plan built from real payments.
Penny spots the card and loan payments in your first statement and asks which ones are debts. Add the balance and the rate, and Mitten works out an avalanche or snowball order and the month you would be debt-free. Payments you link from later statements bring the balance down.
Goodbudget: Debt Accounts track your payoff progress. Its Debt Snowball guide has you work out the order and the extra payment yourself.
Everyone signs in as themselves.
Up to five people each have their own login to one household, and see who added each line. Nobody shares a password, and there is no count of devices to keep under.
Goodbudget: Everyone signs in to the one Household with its username or email and password, on up to two phones free or five on Premium, and on any number of computers.
Mitten is $12 a month or $89 a year for the whole household, up to five people. Goodbudget Premium is $10 a month or $80 a year. That is $9 a year more, for Penny reading and sorting every statement, wherever you bank.

What envelope budgeters ask.
- Does Goodbudget sync with my bank?
- On Premium, for US banks only, according to its plans page. Elsewhere you type spending in or upload QFX, OFX or CSV files. Mitten has no bank sync anywhere, by design. You upload a statement and Penny does the sorting.
- I like envelopes but hate data entry. Is Mitten for me?
- That is who Mitten is built for. Read how envelope budgeting works, or how a month runs on a budget without bank sync.
- Can my partner and I both use Mitten?
- Yes. Invite them by email and they sign in as themselves to the same household. Up to five people share one ledger, one set of envelopes and one debt plan, for one price.
